Tag Archives: behind the scenes
My last post introduced one of the cutest children’s books I have had the joy of designing. I had the honor of working on My Time With Grandma Bible Storybook for Tyndale House Publishers & I thought it would be fun to show some of the behind the scenes of book design. Over the last 17 years of book design I have found that the general public does not at all understand what a book designer “does”… & I have gotten comments such as “don’t you just put it all together like a puzzle?” {ie: they thought I was given the image, typography & color elements & I simply arranged them in Word!} Ha! Not so much … it is a process {SO MUCH FUN!} & starts with a manuscript & blank page in a sketchbook where I can begin to dream.
When designing children’s books specifically one of the first things the designer will do is choose an illustrator. In this case, my art director had already chosen the illustrator, the one and only FABULOUS artist Ela Jarzabek. Ela lives in a village in Poland, so another interesting thing in developing children’s books is working with artists internationally, such as what I did with Jago when I designed The Jesus Storybook Bible. {OH, how I dream of meeting these artists!}
Maybe it’s because I studied illustration in college, or maybe it’s purely because of my love of art, but to me the illustrations carry so much of the success of a children’s book. Sure, you can have a great 32 page story, but without marrying those words to art that compliments the writing style & brings the words to life before a child’s eyes, your book will not shine. It is the ART that makes a picture book come to LIFE! And we were looking for a whimsical artist who could bring these Bible stories to life for children ages 3-6.
The above sketches show my thumbnails of possible cover directions. The product developer wanted to make the grandma & children bears so that they were not limited to race or real age, but rather make an imaginary sweet family to appeal to everyone. Since the book is to be read by a grandma to her grandkids, it also had to appeal to both boys & girls. My thought pattern took me to what would a grandma bear like to do with her grandbears? Obviously they would be outdoors, in a forest, so what activities would both boys & girls take part of?
Some ideas you see include fishing, snuggling in a hammock, sitting on a log enjoying the other animals around them, or laying in the grass reading the bible. I involved my own kids every step of this process {come back another day & I will show you the process of the interior!}
You also will note a variety of fonts {typefaces} I played with, as well as emphasizing “My Time with Grandma” versus “Bible Storybook”. {I personally liked emphasizing “Bible Storybook” as I thought it was a quicker read of the importance of the book, but you will see my opinion did not win out & the publisher felt it was more important to emphasize “My Time with Grandma” to the market.}
The above is the cover direction that won! Grandma reading to her grandbears as the boy playfully lays in the tree while the girl snuggles into grandma after a sweet little picnic. I thumbnail both the cover & back cover so the illustrator can see my vision as well as where typography will interact with the art. I also verbally do a write up to describe anything that is important to me: the squirrel peeking out of the tree, another family of birds, yummy food in the picnic basket, etc… it’s all in my head & my concept. I even reference Ela’s own work to begin to describe the personality of bears she’s done that I want ours to look like, as well as color palette, etc…
The above sketch is what Ela sent back to me… OH MY GOODNESS!!!! There is nothing like seeing your little stick figures & sketches come to life by an artist you admire so much! I think I did the happy dance when I opened my email that morning & downloaded the above sketch!
It is then my turn to place her sketch into my design with typography finalized to present to the publishing committee. {If anyone out there cares, I design books in Adobe InDesign & do any art work in Photoshop} As a team, we discuss any necessary changes & then I give feedback to the artist of what needs to change. In this case, I did not feel like Grandma’s eyes were connecting with the children nor did she look too excited, so I asked Ela to have the grandma make eye contact with her granddaughter. At this stage we also discuss any further color issues if need be.
And, TA-DA!!!! The final cover!!! I could not be happier with this project. Thank you Ela for making my dreams come true. You added more of your heart to this book & went above & beyond in every illustration! I cannot wait to show you all more of the interior process.
So, the next time all of you are book shopping & you think those covers “just happened” … well, think again!
Grace & Peace,
Julie

Psalm 33:20-22
We wait in hope for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.
In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,
even as we put our hope in you.
This verse has meant a lot to me and my husband over the years. The first time I remember it “coming to life” {ie: putting this verse into action in our personal real life} was when we walked through our first miscarriage. This Psalm along with Psalm 34 carried us through. We waited with hope in the Lord, not that the baby would come back to life, but that the Lord would bring healing to our hearts and pain. We understood His presence surrounding us like a shield of protection. We trusted in His holy name, not in the situation or circumstances {though we truly could not begin to understand it}. And, ultimately, we felt His beautiful unfailing love amidst such loss and sorrow.
Over the last couple weeks I once again cling to this verse. All around me is sorrow & suffering. We are broken people living in a broken world. My friend just lost her mom to a battle with cancer {of which she fought like a champ, btw!} A 10 year old child at my kids’ school suddenly died last week & our entire community is simply heartbroken.
In the midst of the pain all we can do sometimes is wait.
We wait for God’s comfort to fill us. We wait for redemption of this fallen world. We wait for strength and healing. We wait for Heaven. And it is only because we trust in His holy name and His loving character that we can even begin to have hope amidst our sorrow.
I chose the image of the couch in the field for 2 totally different reasons:
1. That beautiful red velvet couch is where I find rest & peace so often, so to pair it in nature was natural as I also find solace in the outdoors as I drink in the beauty of God’s creation. I am reminded to to hope, find peace, be still & wait.
2. That said, an empty couch in an empty field symbolizes just that: emptiness. So often when we are walking through suffering or a trial and we are so helpless, and a part of us feels empty. Empty of control. Empty of assurance, strength or confidence. Rather we are broken, awaiting His unfailing love to fill that emptiness in a way that only our Lord can do.

This month my visual assignment for Pick Your Portion was a bit more challenging. After meditating on Luke 21, my assigned portion of the Bible, I decided to highlight some of the instruction Jesus was giving to His disciples concerning the end times. Honestly, this is a hard chapter of the Bible to swallow. It is not the encouragement we are all seeking. It is full of warnings and Jesus instructs us to not grow dull, but be on the alert… keep looking out for Him & do not get bogged down by the worries of this life. Be ready for His coming! This quote is a great reminder of truth for all of us, and I think it would be particularly cool in a boy’s room to remind him of his strength found in the Lord.

Isaiah 40:11
He tends his flock like a shepherd:
He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart;
he gently leads those that have young.
I knew I had read that verse before, as it was underlined in my childhood Bible. But, now that I was a new mom, the words leapt off the page at me. What amazing comfort I felt knowing that God gently gathers me in His strong arms, carries me close to His own heart as I cared for my nursing baby. As a new mom, I had felt so insecure wondering what on earth I was doing caring for this helpless little child in the “unknown” as there is no real training for what was to come. This verse encouraged me and gave me hope that God himself would lead me in this new journey I was on. One interesting thing about this passage is if you read the context {as I hope you would}, in verse 10 it describes God coming with power and His mighty arm and then, LOOK, that same strong arm is used to gently swoop us up and carry us so tenderly.
Fast-forward about 6 years when I am searching for a local sheep farm to photograph Psalm 23. My 3 children and I are ecstatic to go to Farmer Sandy’s the week before Easter and see her new, precious lambs. They are between 2 weeks and several days old and seriously look like stuffed animals walking around. She leads us into the barn where they are warm in their pens. Those mama sheep see me, a total stranger, and immediately start guarding their babies and bleating at me. I could not get any good photos as they were blocking my main subject! It was astounding to be in that barn, seeing those sheep nervously protecting their young and watch as they literally soften when they hear Farmer Sandy’s voice enter in. The sheer sound of her voice put them at ease. They knew they were safe. They even allowed me into the stall and I chose to focus on Ruth and her baby.
After I created my art with their photo, Farmer Sandy had a whole other story to tell me. It turns out the mama sheep Ruth had hemorrhaged during birth and a few days after our visit, she died. The baby lamb, so helpless and weak was left to be cared for by Farmer Sandy herself, as she gently held that lamb and fed her for weeks with a baby bottle.
In so many ways Farmer Sandy has given me a picture of how God is our good shepherd. Her sheep know her voice. She gently cares for the young. She protects and guides them. She nourishes them. And, I am forever grateful for these “real” life lessons of God’s Word coming to life before my eyes.

Every month I contribute my form of worship {visual art} to the Pick Your Portion blog, founded by my sweet {Tyndale author} friend, Lisa Velthouse {I got to design her book Craving Grace, as well as be the sticky cover model…go check it out!}.
Each month she sends me a list of verses to pick from & this month I was particularly excited to have the above verse on my list! I chose to create this verse as a sort of tribute to all of my friends who have adopted a little child into their home. I respect and admire them SO MUCH & this is the least I could do. Their ministry is amazing & though some of those friends are in the thick of snotty noses & sleepless nights, they ARE changing the world! I think these words spoken by Jesus are amazing. I am also partial to the photo, as it is my sweet Pumpkin-Poos sliding her hand into Daddy’s strong hand as we strolled around some local gardens. I took this photo about 3 years ago and I can still picture exactly where we were and how tender her affection is. So precious to hold the hand of a little one! She still will do this to us, though she is 6 years old & I know my days are numbered, so I will relish it while I can!
